Structural modeling of a cell - an emerging frontier

The emerging Grand Challenge of structural modeling in life sciences is 3D simulation of a whole cell - the new frontier in computational structural biology, and the strategic direction of the development of the field. This is the subject of a review article by the Center for Computational Biology researchers Ilya Vakser and Wonpil Im published in the Journal of Molecular Biology (Im et al. Challenges in structural approaches to cell modeling. J Mol Biol 2016, 428: 2943–2964). The review points to the fact that many relevant technologies are already available, and the time has come to start putting them together. The emerging developments increasingly look like the dawn of the new era of structural modeling in molecular biology, opening unprecedented opportunities in fundamental understanding of life at the molecular level, and leading to important applications to biology and medicine.
